Ugly Betty a proven charmer

Ugly Betty a proven charmer

PASADENA, Calif. Its fashion-mag setting will bring inevitable comparisons to the book and movie The Devil Wears Prada and the sitcom Less Than Perfect though in fact the inspiration for the new ABC series Ugly Betty predates them both by several years.

Originating in 1999 as a Colombian telenovela a popular form of Spanish-language soap opera Yo Soy Betty La Fea has been endlessly adapted elsewhere, with versions already airing in India, Israel, Germany, Russia, Mexico, the Netherlands and Spain.

Proven international appeal notwithstanding, there might never have been an American Ugly Betty were it not for drop-dead gorgeous Salma Hayek.

It takes one to know one and the petitely stunning movie actress knows all about telenovela heroines, having begun as one in her native Mexico where her title role in Teresa propelled her to national prominence at the age of 23.
